Paco Garden Enterprises began as a record label in 1995. That year I had inherited an old 3-tape cassette copier machine from work. Our high-school band, Eleventh Hour, would use the machine to make copies of low-quality recordings of our practice sessions. We would put together some photocopied covers and sell the tapes at our shows, then take that money and go buy more tapes. We would turn 3 tapes into 6, 6 into 12, and so forth. Eventually we had enough money to record and produce a 7" e.p.
That 7" was actually released on Red Ear Records, a label run by George Fraska of the band Four!, but was the first step towards the birth of Paco Garden. I very briefly had a hand in Red Ear Records but quickly decided to create a free-standing label. PGR's first official release was the Ben Hogan "7 Inches of Hogan" e.p. in 1995.
From there, Paco Garden Records offered vinyl and digital recordings from local Denver, Colorado bands such as Four!, The Messyhairs, Blacklist, The Ginders, Deadlock Frequency, Angels Never Answer, Scott Baio Army, Line of Descent, and Five Day Messiah as well as national acts like Crispus Attucks or Knowital and compilation albums featuring local Colorado heavyweights such as The VSS, Pinhead Circus, Qualm, Still Left Standing, The Facet, Electric Summer, or The Clusterfux, alongside national and international acts like The Nerve Agents, Inquisition, Decay, Render Useless, Out Cold, The Rudiments, The Force, Chaniwa, and Link 80.
In the early 2000's Paco Garden went into hiatus as I cut ties with the U.S. and freely traveled the globe for a few years. In early 2009, Paco Garden briefly resurfaced to release, in partnership with Frederick Publishing, a book titled Walk that chronicled my 2-year trip throughout Latin America.
Now, in 2017, Paco Garden is back to offer the first in a succession of literary and artistic works set to be produced and released over the next couple of years. The BODYGUARD Travel Companion Cookbook is the first of these offerings, providing a treasure trove of useful information for anyone interested in exploring a plant-based diet while traveling through colorful Mesoamerica... or for those who want to cook and learn from the comfort of home!
